Featured Member of the Month (April 2024): Dr. Ammar Saati, MD FACP FSVM

Ammar Saati, MD, FACP, FSVM, is an associate staff physician in the section of Vascular Medicine in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic, Point of Care Ultrasound Director, APD of the Internal Medicine Residency Program Cleveland Clinic. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a certified physician of the American Board of Vascular Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine. 

 
How and why did you start practicing in the field of vein/lymphatic care?

During my Vascular Medicine Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, I had the privilege of training with Dr. Jospeh, which ignited a deep passion within me. My interest in this field was driven by the profound impact it has on patient outcomes, whether expediting the healing process of venous ulcers or assisting patients in managing venous claudication symptoms. The satisfaction I derive from the entire process, from diagnosing to the implementation of outpatient procedures such as thermal ablation, phlebotomy and sclerotherapy. Further solidified my commitment to this specialized area of healthcare.  Moreover, my dedication extends to enhancing the quality of life for individuals grappling with lymphedema and lipedema challenges. I am committed to providing them with the best care possible, recognizing the significance of addressing their unique needs and improving their overall well-being. 

How long have you been a member of the AVLS and why did you join?

I initially joined the AVLS during my fellowship, and since then I have remained an active member. The primary reason for my continued membership is the invaluable array of resources the AVLS provides, coupled with its advocacy efforts on our behalf with legislators. The organization’s steadfast commitment to supporting our professional needs and promoting awareness has been a driving force for my ongoing association with the AVLS. 

In what way has the AVLS helped you as a vein/lymphatic care provider?

The AVLS has played a pivotal role in supporting my professional journey. The comprehensive courses offered by the AVLS were instrumental in my development, playing crucial role in successfully passing the ABVLM board exam. Additionally, the AVLS provides a wealth of resources, granting access to the latest research, guidelines and standards. This has been invaluable in staying abreast of advancements and ensuring that my practice aligns with the most current and evidence-based approaches. Moreover, the AVLS fosters a strong sense of community among its members, creating valuable opportunities for networking and collaboration. This interconnectedness within the AVLS community has not only enriched my professional relationships but has also opened doors for collaborative initiatives, contributing to a broader impact in the field of vein and lymphatic care.

Any advice for your peers new to the field?

Stay committed to ongoing education and professional development. Establish a solid understanding of the fundamentals. Connect with experienced professionals in the field and find mentors that can provide guidance and share experiences. Stay alongside technological advancements. Join the AVLS to access valuable resources. Be prepared for challenges and setbacks. Maintain a balance between work and self-care. 

What resources does the AVLS provide that would benefit them?

The AVLS offers a wide range of resources that benefit professionals from organizing educational courses and conferences, to publishing clinical guidelines and standards, and providing access to wealth of research, scientific journals and publications relevant to vein and lymphatic care. The AVLS offers excellent networking opportunities, facilitates mentorship programs, provides a platform for professionals to connect with experienced mentors who can offer guidance and insights into navigating the challenges of the field. 

When you are not at work, how do you spend your time?

I cherish spending time with my family, and they are my top priority, particularly as a new dad to my newborn, Aasir, alongside my wife, Kholoud. Whether it’s enjoying a nice dinner out, staying active with workouts or simply relaxing and watching TV shows, these moments bring joy and fulfillment to our lives.
